The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Matteo's Unforeseen Comeback
A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. Finding His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
